I study organisational and societal problems in which digital technologies are central drivers of behaviour and decision-making. I use quantitative (causal/econometric designs, e.g., natural experiments), computational approaches (e.g., NLP, machine learning, and computationally intensive theory construction), or a combination of both as appropriate to the research question. I primarily analyse large-scale digital trace data, and some of my projects draw on primary data from interviews, surveys, and online experiments.
My research interests include computational social science, AI and data science for business and decision-making, social media, computer-mediated communication, and human–computer interaction. A prominent theme in my work addresses how the public sector utilises digital technologies from an ethics or social justice perspective. Another theme in my work focuses on public opinion on social media platforms. Finally, a new theme in my work is at the intersection of human-computer interaction, psycholinguistics, and AI.
